Another headache

879 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Mission 78 - Colonial Uprising
Location: Bremer's Office
Timeline: Current

ON:

Bremer had sent a follow up message to Commander Winter, asking when he planned to leave the station to patrol The Triangle. He’d ordered his Tactical Operations Officer to launch hours before, but so far the USS Laffey was still docked.

He was also getting concerned about his new Chief Security/Tactical Officer. He’d yet to report in since coming on board from the USS Essex.

Mike shook his head. Between Officers not being prompt, he had a damaged Andorian ship in SB400’s docking bay, an angry Andorian Captain and crew in Sick Bay, pirates getting bold again on his back door step, and several Federation Colonies threatening to rebel. What next…?

Over comm, “Admiral, there’s an incoming message from Cardassia Prime coming in for you.” Archer’s voice had a tone of surprise.

“Route it in here please.” Mike replied.

Mike sat down in his chair again, then activated the display. A Cardassian Legit appeared on the screen, his expression was less than pleasant…

“Admiral Bremer, I doubt you remember me…” The Cardassian started.

“Legit Evek, I do remember you. How can I be of assistance?” It took all of Mike’s Vulcan quarter not to go off on Evek.

As a Gul, Evek had been the Cardassian area commander during the formation of the DMZ between Federation and Cardassian space, which lead directly to the formation of the Maquis. During the Dominion war, Evek had been a skilled commander, yet ruthless. His, ‘take no prisioneers’ attitude lead to the deaths of many unarmed and wounded Federation, Klingon, and Romulan troops. Evek and Bremer had faced off a few times during the war, in fleet action as well as one on one battles. However, Evek had also been one of the first Cardassian commanders to switch sides when the Jem Hadar started killing Cardassian civilians in mass at the end of the war. Following the war, Evek was promoted to Legit and worked with Garek and the new Cardassian civilian government to rebuilt their world and the Cardassian Union itself.

Evek let out a breath, “One of our freighters was returning from No’lan Five when it reported contact by a Federation runabout just after returning to Federation space. We lost contact with them after that.”

“No’lan Five is deep within Romulan space, only thing there is a Romulan weapons production facility. Why would one of your freighters make a trip there?” Mike’s tone was clearly one of distrust.

“The freighter was returning the weapons arrays of several Romulan Warbirds that were destroyed during the Dominion war at Chin’toka and recently discovered embedded on the surface. We were simply returning them to the Romulans.” Evek replied with the smugness common among Cardassians.

Mike paused a moment. Of course he didn’t believe Evek, “And you said the freighter was stopped by a Federation runabout?”

“Yes, one of your older Sydney class vessels. The freighter was told every ship crossing from Romulan into Federation space was to be stopped and searched. Communications were cut off at that point.” Evek replied.

“Send me the last known coordinates of the freighter…” Mike replied, but was cut off…

“I’ve already sent that information to Gul Mavek and asked him to search for the freighter. However, because of the treaty between our peoples, and this being within Federation space, I am forced to…bother you with this as well.” Evek replied, again with arrogance.

Mike flashed a fake smile, “It’s no bother at all. We’ll provide Gul Mavek any assistance he might need. Bremer out.”

Mike quickly closed the comm, then leaned back in his chair. He let out a deep breath before tapping his comm-badge.

“Gul Mavek, report to my office.”

Several minutes later, the Cardassian Liaison Officer to Starbase 400 entered Admiral Bremer’s Office. Another Dominion War veteran, Mavek had been on Gul Dukat’s staff during the Dominion’s occupation of DS9. He later served on Legit Damar’s staff. Following the war, he was promoted to Gul. While Mike didn’t trust Cardassians…almost has much as he distrusted Romulans, he and Mavek had formed a working relationship and got along professionally.

“You asked to see me Admiral?” Mavek asked as he entered.

“Legit Evek contacted me regarding a missing Cardassian freighter along the Federation/Romulan border. He said you’d been provided it’s last known coordinates and other information?”

“Yes.” He handed Bremer a Cardassian isoliner rod, “All of the data I was sent in on the rod. I’ll be taking the Kreta out in an hour.”

Mike nodded, “Very well. If you need assistance, please let me know.”

Mavek gave a nod, “Of course.” Then he turned and left Bremer’s Office.

Mike looked at the rod for a moment before letting the computer access it. The coordinates were just over three light years away, and as explained a Sydney class runabout did intercept the freighter. It’s subspace marker was offline, and Mike was certain this was one of the stolen Sydneys Captain K`Temoc and the Yorktown were after. He sent the data to the Yorktown, hoping it would help them track down the stolen and missing ships.
