A hostile welcome...

598 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Mission 78 - Colonial Uprising
Location: USS Yorktown
Timeline: Same time as Bremer's post

ON:

The ship was nearing the first of the three Federation Colonies within the borders of the Neutral Zone, Nelvana III. The planet was once the site of a supposed Romulan strategic base and standoff between the USS Enterprise-D and Romulan Commander Tomalok in the late 2360s. Once the Zone was dismantled following the Dominion War, the planet was one of three Class M systems ‘assigned’ to the Federation. Nelvana III was barely Class M and required three years of atmospheric generation before colonization.

Today, there’s over fifteen thousand Federation citizens living on Nelvana III and a vast mining operation. Most of the population was Human, but there was a significant number of Adorians, Tellarites, and Bolians.

“Take us out of warp Chief.” K`Temoc ordered.

“Captain, we’re being hailed from the planet.” An Ensign spoke up from the aft station.

“On Screen.” K`Temoc replied.

On the screen, a middle-aged Human appeared. “I am Governor Axman of Nelvana III, to whom am I speaking?”

Still seated in the command chair, K`Temoc calmly crossed his legs, “Governor, I’m Captain K`Temoc of the Federation Starship USS Yorktown. We’re here to check on your evacuation progress and to see if there was anything you needed to assist in that endeavor.”

“No, we’re doing just fine…up-rooting fifteen thousand people from their homes, their lives, it takes time.” Governor Axman replied, angrily.

“I understand Governor, and the Federation is willing to help out in anyway possible…”

K`Temoc was cut off by Axman, “If that were true, then the Federation would fight for our homes and not forcibly move us.” He shook his head, “Did the Federation not learn from trying to forcible move colonists from the Alpha Quadrant, the Maquis?”

K`Temoc stood, “I was hoping that the Colonists had learned from the Maquis example, when the Jem Hadar swooped in and annihilated them all. The Romulans won’t hesitate to do the same.” He paused a moment, “These homes can be replaced, your lives can’t. We don’t want to force you out, but another war won’t do any of us any good. Your world will be one of the first attacked if it came down to that, and your colony doesn’t have defenses.”

“We have means to defend ourselves, Captain. It’s sad you place so little faith in us, and even less value in us as Federation citizens.” The Governor paused, “Some of our population are planning to move and will be ready by the deadline, but not all of us will be going.”

“The Federation will not be able to protect you if you stay. As a matter of fact, the Romulan might view your still being here as a violation of treaty.” K`Temoc’s tone was sincere.

“Then we will protect our homes ourselves, and possibly die for them. I’ve spoken to the other Governors and we’re in agreement on this Captain. We’ll contact you if we need anything.” Axman replied.

K`Temoc nodded, “We’ll be in the area a few days, patrolling the Romulan border, making sure they do not cross over and harass you. We’ll also check in with the other Colonies. Good luck to you sir.”

With that, the comm channel was closed.

K’`Temoc sat back in his chair and looked over at Harrison, “He said they have means to defend themselves…scan the area for any ships, either in orbit, open space, in atmospheric flight, or landed on the surface.”
