302 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Mission 78 - Colonial Uprising
Location: Tressa's Quarters
Timeline: current

Tressa adjusted the amphorae for the twentieth time, watching how the soft earth tones blended in the light, and how they stood apart. It was only a replica, her original had been destroyed with the Essex. But the replica was so well done it was impossible to tell the difference with the naked eye. This vase seemed much smaller than the other one, because it was occupying a larger space. She would have to find something appropriate to share the space.

"Aunt Tres, can we go to Res Anders' after dinner?" Xavier asked. Kaylee was next to him, her deep dark eyes begging the question in silence.

"Sure, after your homework is done," she said to the children's backs as they ran over to the table to finish their lessons. She listened to their chatter as she continued her decorating, laughing to herself from time to time as Kaylee corrected her headstrong twin brother. The little girl was as patient as she had been with their father.

She wondered how much their lives would change now that they were assigned to Starbase 400. She hadn't talked to them about it yet, and the truth of it was that their lives might not change very much. In their young lives they had lost both parents, lived briefly on Earth with their grandmother, and then had adapted to life on a starship with an aunt who hadn't seen them since infancy.

Half Betazoid, the twins were as different as two children could be, and Kaylee certainly seemed to possess an empathic ability. Her learning guide had already assigned a Betazoid guide to her as well. There were few Betazoid children on the Essex, would there be many on the Starbase?

She sighed and looked at her Roman vase again. More to the right, she thought.
