Episode 88 - Memories Lost, Trouble Found
Location: Starbase 400, Ops
Timeline: MD4 0815hrs
ON:
It was a busy morning on Starbase 400. The USS Tirpitz was supposed to depart for a Marine training flight and T’Lar, Solomon, and Ramata’tar were leaving aboard the USS Steadfast on a more personal mission. Bremer and Worf had been in Sick Bay and were returning to Ops after talking with Rodek. It was true, he couldn't remember anything still...his life as Kurn or his life as Rodek. He’d had flashes, glimpses of memories he couldn’t hold on to. Rodek didn’t know why he’d attacked Worf the night before either. Now, he was resting in Sick Bay.
“Admiral, I’ve found something, but it’s not good news.” Roebuck spoke up from Tactical Two.
Mike and Worf, soon joined by K’Temoc who was also in Ops, walked over behind Roebuck.
Apparently, last month, Rodek was attacked by another Klingon while in a bar on the Homeworld. A second Klingon also joined in on the attack against Rodek. Rodek was able to kill one when he turned around and stabbed a Klingon behind him. That Klingon wasn't part of the fight, he was just watching. That Klingon was T’ral la’ of the IKS Gorkon.” Roebuck tapped in a command and a security video appeared, showing Rodek’s fight and how T’ral grabbed Rodek from behind trying to point toward the other attacker but Rodek spun around and stabbed him in the neck before he realized he’d killed the wrong Klingon. Rodek then backed away...looked for the other attacker and chased him out the bar.
“The Gorkon, that’s General Klag’s ship. Rodek was posted there fifteen years ago, just prior to him recovering his memories as Kurn.” Worf added.
“The other attacker ran off and Rodek went after him. Rodek was later charged with T’ral’s death.” Roebuck continued. “After that, he disappeared from the Homeworld.
A moment later, Archer spoke up, “Admiral...three Klingon ships have just decloaked at the outer marker.”
“On screen.” Bremer ordered as he looked up. On the screen three Klingon ships, a K’Vort class battlecruiser, a Vor’cha class Attack Cruiser, and a larger Qang class Cruiser appeared on screen, slowly approaching Starbase 400.
Bremer looked at K’Temoc, then Worf, “How’s that for timing.”
Mike then walked closer to the new Main Viewer in Ops, “Hail them.”
A moment later, the screen changed to a Klingon emblem then the face of Klag sa’. “General, this is Fleet Admiral Mike K’Wor Bremer of the Federation station, Starbase 400. What brings you here?”
Klag’s arms were crossed as he stood with authority, “The famous K’Wor. You are well regarded the Klingon Empire, it’s an honor to finally meet you. And Captain Worf, it’s an honor to see you again.”
“The honor is mine General.” Worf replied.
“We request the honor of docking at your space station for shore leave. We have been on an extended mission, our crews are restless.” Klag explained.
Archer leaned over toward Gillo, “Ever notice how many times Klingons say ‘honor’ in a day?”
Bremer cut Archer a look, then he looked back at the screen. “You and your ships are welcome to dock General, just remind your crews this is a Federation Starbase...don't get too rowdy. I’ll meet you at the air lock in fifteen minutes.”
Klag gave a respectful node, “Til then Admiral.” With that, the channel closed.
“This timing is too convenient.” K’Temoc said.
“I agree, they’re looking for Rodek.” Mike added then tapped his commbadge, “Bremer to Lokran and Jackson. We have three Klingon ships dropping by for shore leave, but I don’t expect trouble. General, I want Marines to patrol the Promenade and all decks. Commander, I want a double guard on Sick Bay, one inside and one out. No one gets into Sickbay without my authorization. Also I want both of you to post guards in all vital locations and all airlocks. Bremer out”
Several minutes later, Bremer, K’Temoc, Worf, and T’Lar arrived at the airlock as General Klag, Captain Toq, and Captain Leskit stepped through.
“General, I’m Fleet Admiral Bremer. This is my Station Executive Officer Admiral T’Lar, this is Captain K’Temoc, and you know Captain Worf.” Mike introduced.
Klag gave a nod, “This is Toq HoD of the IKS Kreltek and Leskit HoD of the IKS Hopliq.”
Worf knew Toq, he'd rescued him in 2369 from a crash site. Both Worf and Bremer knew Leskit...Bremer from his time aboard the IKS Bortas before the Klingon/Cardassian War of 2372 and Worf knew him from his time aboard the IKS Rotarran during the Dominion War. After a moment for everyone to meet, Klag clapped his hands saying ‘DaH!’
Two Warriors stepped forward with large barrel...
“A gift Fleet Admiral, bloodwine, 2309.” Klag announced.
“A very good year.” Bremer replied. “nuqneH”.
Mike looked back at one of the Security Guards, “Lieutenant, show them to Cargo Bay Four.”
“You're going to put 2309 Bloodwine in a cargo bay?” Toq asked.
Bremer smirked, “Yes...right beside two other barrels, a case of Romulan Ale,a barrel of Tennessee Whisky, and some other...quality drinks.”
After a moment, Toq and Leskit laughed and Klag smiled.
The group made their way to the closest turbolift, and headed up to Ops. Klag was the first to speak, “Thank you for allowing us to dock. We have been on an exploration mission, then patrolling along the Romulan border. It’s been a long deployment.”
“As long as everyone behaves themselves.” K’Temoc replied with a smirk.
A few minutes later, Bremer led the Klingons on a brief tour of Ops before they headed into the Briefing Room. Everyone took a seat except for Mike. He waited for everyone to sit, then he straightened up his uniform, crossed his arms, and looked at Klag.
“General, why are you here?”
Toq and Leskit looked to Klag, Klag looked at Bremer...a little anger in his eyes. “I told you, shore leave.”
Bremer paused, then asked again, “General, why are you here?”
Klag stood up, “What are you accusing us of, Fleet Admiral?”
“General, I want the truth, why are you really here. There were other Starbases, Klingon Starbases closer but you came here. Why?” Bremer replied.
Klag looked at Toq and Leskit for a moment, the at Worf, and finally back to Bremer. “What I told you of shore leave is true, but yes, we came here for a reason...we're looking for someone. It is a Klingon matter.”
“Look around you General, Worf, K’Temoc, and I are all members of the House of Martok...it doesn't get any more Klingon than that!” Bremer rebutted.
Klag took a breath, “We were told to see if he was here and then bring him back to the Homeworld, we were not to involve you and we did not expect Worf to still be here...we did not want a conflict of interest to cause any...problems.”
“You are looking for Rodek?” Worf finally asked.
“Yes.” Klag replied. “He murdered a member of my Bridge crew in cold blood, then ran like a bIHnuch!”
“That’s not how the reports we read describe it.” K’Temoc interjected as he stood.
“We saw the reports and the security footage.” It really reminded Worf of when he'd been commanding the Defiant and accused of not looking (scanning) before firing on and destroying an unarmed transport ship. “General, is this a personal vendetta against Rodek for his challenge against you fifteen years ago?”
Klag’s face shown his anger, “Rodek challenged me because of the lies of a veQ! He didn't bother to come to me as an honorable warrior would!”
Worf stood, “Rodek was being manipulated by Dorrek, your brother. He was lied to, told you were behind the procedure to alter his crest and remove his memories...changing him from Kurn to Rodek, as well as the death of Noggra.”
“You Worf, you defend him, after he told you if he ever saw you again that he'd kill you? Are you blind?” Klag sarcastically asked.
“Calm down everyone.” Bremer said, as calmly as possible. “Put yourself in Rodek’s place. He was going through memory issues, remembering his life as Kurn, he was seeking answers, and Dorrek seemingly provided them along with security footage of Noggra being killed. He was confused and angry. No, he didn’t go about it the right way, but you had final say and removed him from your ship Klag. After that, he moved from ship to ship, then to Toran before leaving the Defense Force after the Toral incident...no Klingon trusting him, his honor questioned. Then, just when he’d starting to recover some of that honor he’s attacked and in the heat of battle he made a mistake and killed the wrong man. It’s not right...but you can see how it can happen.”
Klag paused and took a breath, he and Worf both sat back down. A moment later K’Temoc also sat as Klag spoke, “I do, understand, but he must be brought in for trial.”
“Who sent you here Klag?” Worf asked, sensing someone else was pulling the strings, “Earlier you said you were ‘told’ he would be here.”
Klag again paused, looked around the room before replying, “Chancellor Martok.”
Bremer and Worf both looked at each other for a moment, both were not happy...to say the least.
“General, Rodek is suffering from total amnesia caused by an accident aboard his shuttle. I'll have Commander Lokran provide you access to his shuttle and ask Doctor Brisian to send her Medical files on this to your ship for B'Oraq ‘Sogh to look over. In the meantime, I'm going to speak with the Chancellor.” Bremer finally replied.
Klag nodded once more then respectfully said, “We will wait and review your information. Until then, may our crews enjoy your station?”
“Of course.” Bremer replied.
With that, Mike turned to leave the Briefing Room, as T’Lar passed Mike look at her, “Good luck” and flashed a smile, then he and Worf headed for Mike’s Office while the rest went their own ways.
As Mike passed through Ops, he was handed a PADD by his Yeoman. On it was an extradition order for Rodek, Son of Noggra, signed by the Starfleet Sector JAG Officer and a Klingon Advocate on QonoS. “Open a channel to the Klingon Homeworld, Priority One, and mark it for Chancellor Martok.”
A moment later, Bremer was in his Office. He turned the desktop display around from its usual facing toward his chair position to the other side of his desk where he and Worf were standing. The Federation emblem appeared and a moment later the Klingon Imperial Emblem. A few seconds later a grizzled old Klingon appeared, “I’m Re’al, Chancellor Martok’s aid. The Chancellor is busy and is unable to speak with you today. I will advise him of your call.”
“Re’al, do you know who I am?” Bremer asked, almost smugly.
“A Starfleet Admiral.” Re’al replied, equally smug.
“I'm Fleet Admiral Mike K’Wor Bremer, a member of the House of Martok. This is Captain Worf, also of the House of Martok, put us through to the Chancellor, now.” Mike replied, angry.
“I don't care what House you're a member of, the Chancellor is busy.” Re’al replied.
“Re’al, the Pegasus can be at QonoS in less than four hours at Slipstream, would you rather put the Chancellor through now or wait til we are there in person?” Bremer replied.
Re’al sat there for a moment, then put the transmission on hold. A moment later, Chancellor Martok appeared on screen.
“Worf, K’Wor...” Martok said as the screen came to life.
“Chancellor, why are you trying to extradite Rodeck back to the Empire to face trial?” Worf asked, defiantly.
“And why were we not informed?” Bremer also asked.
“Rodek committed a crime on the Homeworld, he’s to face trial like any other dishonorable Klingon who killed someone without proper reason. I am the Chancellor of the Klingon Empire and leader of your House, I didn't know I needed your permission!” Martok replied, also angry.
“You don't, but you should...” Worf started before Martok cut him off.
“Should have what? Told you, either of you? You'd be doing just what you are now, hiding behind Federation legal maneuvers and questioning things. Klag made a request for trial for the unnecessary murder of his Officer, if Rodek is innocent he has nothing to fear.” Martok said.
“Rodek has nothing to fear because he can't remember anything. He’s suffering from a Grade Three Concussion and total memory loss. He doesn't remember anything of the fight in the bar, his life as Rodek, or his life as Kurn. He would be defenseless in a trial...be it a Federation or Klingon court.” Bremer replied.
“Release Rodek to General Klag, his medical staff will treat him on the way to QonoS. That’s an order as the Chancellor and the Leader of your House!” Martok barked in reply then he paused for a moment before adding, “We can discuss this later when we’re all in clearer minds.” With that, he closed the channel.
Both Mike and Worf were angry, but there was nothing they could do from a legal, or Klingon position.
“I'll have Doctor Brisian have Rodek ready to travel in the morning.” Mike finally said.
“I'll request Malor be allowed to accompany Rodek aboard the Gorkon as his boQwI' for the trip back to the Homeworld.” Worf added.
After another brief moment, both men left Bremer’s Office.
