Mission:
Mission 87 - Disaster
Location: Engineering, Deck 1026
Timeline: 10 Minutes After 'The Briefing'
Engineering was chaos. Absolute chaos. Well, that was the best way jack could describe it. After sprinting to his quarters to get his flight bag and packing all the essential (well, not packing, throwing), he then entered main engineering with his bag flung on his shoulders and his mouth dropped.
There were bodies everywhere. People were flinging themselves at storage units, command consoles and generally yelling at each other for positonic this and dilithium that while pushing some sort of devices nearly running over several people with it in the process. The excitement of imminent departure certainly didn’t rub off on Travers, who emerged from the mess with a scowl on his face. “All the kids getting excited” he growled. “Makes me wish I never joined up”. “ahhh don’t you worry about it Trave” grinned Jack, “it’s not every day we’re called away for an op so enjoy it while it lasts”.
Together they stumbled through the bedlam, heading out of engineering itself towards the turbolifts. Along the way, the bumped into Watson, who was leant against a wall, looking at his foot, swearing profusely? “What happened Tom”? said Jack as they got to him “Some bloody numpty ran me over with a SATCOM. Didn’t see his face otherwise I would have re-arranged it for him”. Jack burst out laughing and said “No wonder you two are best mates, you got the same poor outlook on everything. Come on let’s get there”.
They then stepped (Watson hopped), onto the lifts together with some harassed AB’s, some RSJ’s and Lieutenant Thompson of Beta Watch. “Hello Ben, this isn’t your watch is it” said jack as the lift started moving up. “Na Jack, I got woken by all the announcements and then came down here to find half the station ruining my storerooms, a roving gang from Alpha watch stealing all my PADD’S and learning that the Skyline’s not even open so i can’t have a beer”. “You should join these two, they got the same outlook as you do” said jack, still grinning. “Welcome to the club” muttered Travers.
The lift stopped and spurted them out at the flight deck. Jack gazed out the window and spotted their quarry: NCC-24891. USS Ark Royal. Ambassador Class Heavy Cruiser. 60 years old but still packs a wallop with 10 phaser arrays and two torpedo launchers. Comfortable at Warp 7 but she’ll do 10 at a pinch. A wonder of engineering. Jack received a tap on the shoulder and he turned round. It was Travers. “Sir, sorry to break you out of your daydream, but I just spoke to Dye, he’s with Truman but no sign of Walsh as yet. They’re waiting for us on the Royal, engineering deck 2”. “Well let’s go then guys, Walshie will catch us up” said Jack cheerfully as they walked towards the bay doors.
There was still the same chaos up here then there was downstairs; people running everywhere, shouting for spare parts and proper docking procedures. They walked past bay tunnel 4 and spotted some marines including their colonel heading towards the Saratoga. “Must be bad if the marines are going with us” said Watson. “Hell, maybe they’re there to bake cakes” sneered Travers. They walked on, past the Venator at bay 7 until they arrived at bay 9. Just outside the gate, they spotted Walshie, standing alone and looking terrified. “Nervous Walshie?” said jack, smiling despite himself. “I am sir” squeaked Walshie. “You’ll be alright Ensign, let’s go” said Jack, giving Walsh a thump on the back. “Well guys, I have no idea what this trip is going to hold, but I’m glad to be doing it with you. Trave, get hold of Dye and tell him we’re embarking now. Everyone got all their kit?” everyone nodded. “Well Royal, let’s see what you got for us”.
