Personal History | After graduating from the Academy, Robert found himself posted on the newly commissioned USS Enterprise; one of the few who got posted. He started his time as a damage control specialist and saw lots of action. In 2365; and a promotion to Lt. JG, the chief engineer at the time, Geordie LaForge, saw something in the young engineer and took him under his wing. During a major conflict in 2367, he lost 8 friends when the hull ruptured in engineering, the last thing he could see of one of them was being taken away in the vacuum of space as the Borg cutting beam sliced open the engineering section of the ship. He would survive the battle in the end. After several years and major crisises (even being sent to the mines of Ligos VII for slave labor), and a promotion to Lieutenant Commander, his tour on the Enterprise ended on 2366, when the ship was lost in the battle of Veridian III. Despite a severe head injury and cracked ribs during the crash landing. He would remain inactive for a while, and was posted to the USS Explorer in 2374. After a run in with an overly obsessive Cardassian after the love of the captain's girlfriend, and saving her with the help of his very close friend James Weatherlight, Robert was promoted to commander and given the position as chief engineer of the Explorer During a routine mission in 2379, Smith was asked by Starfleet Intelligence to assist them in a mission to recover stolen plans of Sovereign-Class starships and investigate their weapon facility. The mission was compromised, and Smith sacrificed his freedom to save the rest of the team, but the Romulan commander reigned on his end of the deal and destroyed the shuttle carrying the rest of the team. Starfleet made an exchange for Robert's freedom, and was blamed for several mishaps on a number of ships; under the impression that he was talking to his captors. Robert was then sent to Starbase 400 and was demoted to Lieutenant JG. The idea was for Robert to settle down on New Avalon and contemplate his future, while holding a grudge against those who blamed him for the failure. His contemplation ended before a decision was made. In 2381 he was recalled to active duty as assistant Chief Engineer to starbase 400 and was thrust into a crisis. After that crisis ended, Robert made a decision to leave Starfleet, but after listening to what Admiral Bremier had to say on the matter, he stayed. His promotion to Lieutenant was a major confidence boost and reinforced his commitment to Starfleet and his new friends. |
