Personality & Traits

General Overview On first acquaintance, Albert Loring appears sullen and gruff. This could not be further from the truth. His duties have always required a sternness he has to force into his demeanor. To those that know him, Bert is a kind and warm gentleman raised in a society of gentlemen. Quiet and reserved in most circumstances, but more than willing to open his heart to those around him, to reach out a hand to those in need. A life of service is all he has ever craved. Service to the crown, service to his world, service to the Federation and -- most importantly of all -- service to his family.
Strengths & Weaknesses A sympathetic heart has always been one of Albert Loring's greatest assets as well as a tragic flaw. He has always heard the call of the needy and answers it tirelessly -- more than once to the determent of himself or those close to him.

His sense of duty and loyalty to those entrusted with the sacred offices of command make him a stalwart companion to the crews he has been a part of during his long career with Starfleet.

His age, combined with the loss of most of his family -- and world -- during the Borg Invasion has left a hole in Albert's life, a hole he is unsure how to fill. It leaves him listless at times, when given the chance to dwell on it even after nearly a decade.

Albert secretly feels his life has been spent, that his life of service has led him through his varied adventures to this moment in life. In this moment he sees himself virtually alone in the universe. His only surviving child and grandchild live on Earth while he -- yet again -- stands watch against the night. In the darkest hours of the night, when sleep eludes him, Albert wonders to himself if it has all been worth it. Self doubt has become the greatest of his weaknesses, one he desperately attempts to keep under control.
Ambitions Albert wants very much to see his granddaughter grow up in the paradise that he has helped safeguard. He is quietly contemplating retirement.
Hobbies & Interests His ancient ancestors were bowmen in the war train of William the Conqueror. In honor of that decent, Albert has spent his life mastering the bowyer's craft.

Sports of all kinds have been a consistant part of Albert's life since boyhood as well -- though many would say he was never very good at most of them. Of the varied sports he has practiced in his life, the only ones that stuck well with him was Track and Fencing. The rest, sports like Football and Rugby, he could never really get the hang of.

He is a very poor swimmer, something he has been attempting -- and failing -- to change late in life.
Languages English, Latin, some Vulcan and Bajoran though not enough to be considered "fluent".

Personal History Albert Loring was born on April 15, 2319 on the planet Buckingham, a world colonized predominantly by colonists from the British Isles in the mid 22nd century. Loring's family came to Buckingham on one of the first colonization waves, establishing themselves as members of the world's upper class families. Their fortunes waxed and waned over the centuries, and by Albert's birth they were simply well to do members of Buckingham society.

Simon Loring was a Police Officer in the capital, while Maude Loring taught history at the University. The Loring Children -- all boys -- consisted of one elder son, a brilliant thinker that took after his mother named Johnathan; one physically minded younger son named William, who followed his father into the constabulary; and a set of twins in the middle, both of which took different paths than either of their parents. Both twins were studious -- like their mother -- but held deep beliefs in public service. James, Albert's twin, was elected to Buckingham's Parliament at the age of 25 and remained in government service until the Borg came. For Albert however, service had a different meaning.

Albert could very well have become a police officer like his father and younger brother, but something else called to him, called him towards the stars. He had always been fascinated by the night sky, with the stars and the stories his people had told about them for countless centuries. He attempted, thrice, to gain entry into Starfleet Academy and was rejected each time. That's however did not put an end to Albert's dreams to soar among the stars.

After his third rejection to the Academy in 2339, at the age of 20, Albert Loring left Buckingham for Earth and Starfleet's Enlisted Personnel Training Program. His initial plan was to serve and apply to OCS after time and training had helped mold him. The universe had different plans.

Albert initially did not want to work in security, as it was too much like his father's profession back home. However, it did appeal to him as it was something he had known most of his life. After Basic Training, he accepted a position as Security Specialist aboard the USS Armstrong. He served aboard the Armstrong for a decade before being assigned to the Federation Offices on Buckingham. While there, he reconnected with an old friend from his youth, Sarah Ellis, and the two were soon married. Sarah, a family doctor on Buckingham, remained on their homeworld when Albert was transferred to another Starship five years later. Their lives remained like this, with Albert being assigned at times near to Buckingham, then away for a time and then home again.

In the 2370's, Albert served aboard the USS Venture. By this point in his career he had changed gears and performed many administrative duties -- though he managed to get into the field often enough. With their children grown, Sarah was able to secure a position aboard the Venture as a civilian doctor. It was, to Albert's recollection, the happiest time in their lives. With the outbreak of war with the Dominion, Albert and Sarah returned to Buckingham. Sarah returned to her practice, while Albert was assigned once again to the Federation Offices, this time as adjunct to the Buckingham's Councillor to the Federation, James Loring.

The close of the war, rebuilding efforts and the need for experienced hands kept Albert from retirement. It seemed like crisis after crisis cropped up and he could not justify to himself leaving the service when it seemingly needed him the most. One more year, he told Sarah year after year, pushing their golden years further and further back.

And then the Borg returned.

Albert was on Earth with James when the news came of Buckingham's loss. The twins -- virtually all that remained of not only their family but their civilization as well -- returned to Buckingham only once, to witness with their own eyes the smoldering ruins of their once beautiful world. Centuries of progress, wiped away in a matter of minutes. A billion lives snuffed out. It was too much for James to bear and he took his own life with the phaser he carried "just in case", leaving his twin brother alone on the burnt world with nothing but his sorrow.

Albert returned to Earth, unsure of the future. He very nearly left Starfleet after James' suicide, until he thought of Sarah. It was not a happy thought that kept the uniform on Albert, but rather the loneliness and loss. His duty was all he had left.

Of course that was not the whole truth. In time, refugees from Buckingham cropped up, survivors that fled on civilian vessels. Two months after the invasion ended, Elizabeth, the Loring's youngest daughter and her infant daughter Beatrice arrived on Earth. For a moment, Albert felt relief and allowed himself the thought that it was over.

But duty still called.

Nearly a decade has passed and the recovery has been completed. The only thing that stops Albert Loring from leaving the service now, after 50 years in Starfleet, is the fear of the unknown... of what life will be like without the uniform. So he continues to wear it, until his courage is built up enough for one last adventure.
