Personality & Traits
General Overview | As the third of four children raised initially on starships, Joseph began life as a reasonably studious and quiet child that kept himself to himself. Never quite threatening to be top of his class, but also never at risk of being an academic worry, he remained solidly middle of the pack. With a growing family causing the children to move to a planet-based home affording Joseph the opportunity to meet a wider-group of people, and without the strict discipline of his ship-based father, he began to develop a less regimented disposition whilst at the same time growing social skills. With a quick wit and quicker mouth, Bracknell is assessed too often and being one that speaks before he thinks, and whilst never being in danger of being dramatically under-performing academically, very rarely challenges himself. |
Strengths & Weaknesses | With an obvious, yet staunchly denied rebellious need to deny convention in terms of his family history with Starfleet, Joseph has inadvertently given himself a more extensive adaptability in comparison to his siblings. Astute at assessing situations and decision making in the heat of the moment, he has a very quick mind, and can always be relied upon to act or speak the quickest. He does however have a clear issue with humility and gauging the right and wrong time to comment, as well as a habit of finding light moments when the perhaps shouldn't be. |
Ambitions | Surprisingly nonchalant in comparison to his peers, Bracknell holds no lofty ambitions for rank or position. More focused instead on seeing which assignments, missions or surroundings he enjoys best, with promotion or role being a secondary concern. |
Hobbies & Interests | A man that enjoys relaxing whenever possible, Joseph has relatively few hobbies in order to prevent keeping himself busy, instead enjoying procrastinating in his spare time instead. When off-duty he will be largely found in his quarters, though will venture out to the holodecks, lounges or mess when feeling restless. |

Personal History | Born in 2376 to the then-Lieutenant Commander Andrew Bracknell and his wife, Lieutenant Hannah Bracknell, aboard the USS Epimetheus. Both had led decorated careers and had distinguished themselves during the Dominion War, with the Epimetheus seeing action in 9 major engagements, as well as 17 smaller engagement and a number of skirmishes. With Andrew being the Chief Tactical Officer during the war and Hannah being the Assistant Chief Medical Officer of the ship, Joseph's two older siblings; Edward and Chloe, had been sent to live with Hannah's parents on Earth. Upon the war's end and Andrew's promotion to Executive Officer, the Captain of the Epimetheus allowed for the family to be reunited onboard and Joseph's birth fell within the post-war baby boom, as many surviving Starfleet officers made the most of their war ending. Growing up on the Epimetheus until the age of 9, Joseph was initially a rather quiet child that kept himself to himself. With a younger sibling born a couple of years after him in the shape of his brother Gareth, he was no longer the youngest of three, but the third of four. This put him in the awkward situation of being the 'forgotten child', to a degree. Not the eldest, nor the second oldest in competition with the first born, nor the youngest always seen as needing most looking after. Choosing to use the opportunity to enjoy his own company, this plan was scuppered by his father's promotion to Captain and the chance of his own command. Being given the USS van Leeuwenhoek, a Nova class ship, meant there would not be the room for the family of six to all move onboard. Hannah, now a Lieutenant Commander and a Chief Medical Officer in her own right, decided it best to take a posting with Starfleet Medical and as such took the four children with her to Earth, until such time that Andrew could transfer to command a larger ship that could accommodate them all. The move to Earth was both a benefit and a hindrance for Joseph. With a far greater variety of people to interact with than he had been afforded on the Epimetheus, he began to come out of his shell. However, this also meant he became a far less studious character. Far more time was now spent with friends than locking himself in the room he shared with his younger brother, and his dedication to trying to improve himself academically waned. At the age of 14 his older brother, Edward, caused quite the scandal in the immediate family. For generations previously the Bracknell family had become Starfleet officers. The family tree was littered with ship Captains, a few that remained lower-level officers throughout their careers and even the occasional flag officer. However, Edward had chosen to join Starfleet as an enlisted man. This had caused a stir with his father, who had pinned hopes on his first born following in his footsteps to become a ship's captain. This defiance of his family expectations had a profound influence on Joseph, who had previously only really ever thought of following the family tradition of officer training within Starfleet. His sister's acceptance into the officer programme for Starfleet 2 years later had fallen in line with the done thing, but still Joseph had become disillusioned with the idea. At the age of 18 Joseph defied all convention and did not apply for Starfleet in any capacity, suffering the wrath of parents and siblings alike. Instead deciding to travel the quadrant, Joseph was effectively ostracised as the son that did not want to contribute to the Federation, when the Bracknell family had done so for hundreds of years. Rarely settling in any one location for more than a matter of months, Joseph spent years visiting the traditional tourist locations of Andoria, Vulcan, Betazed and a raft of other worlds, before venturing a little from the beaten path for a young traveller and spending time at Freecloud. The underground criminal element was not only restricted to the shadows and after inadvertently getting himself involved in an altercation with a Lyssarian mobster, Joseph went for the safe bet and spent the best part of a year on Risa instead. Here he became a barman on the popular resort planet and had started to grow tired of the now nearly 4 years of aimlessly travelling. He'd realised that whilst the environment and the views would change, every day was effectively becoming the same. This is just the way life is, but the lack of any real meaning behind it had begun to weigh heavy on his mind, like a guilt. One afternoon, several months into his stay on Risa, the USS Bond stopped over for two days, giving their crew a day shore leave. The ship housed a marine contingent returning from a 6 month peacekeeping deployment on a Romulan refugee planet, who began speaking to Joseph at the bar. His interest piqued by the stories they told and the way they conducted themselves, Bracknell spent weeks after their departure considering applying. He had grown weary of his listless ambling from planet to planet and at the age of 21 applied for marine officer training. |
